Is
WHY FINE MOTOR SKILLS MATTER
Strong fine motor foundations help children write, read and focus on classroom content without effort or fatigue. Research links early fine motor development to academic performance — when less effort goes into the mechanics of writing, more capacity is freed up for ideas and comprehension.
Your child may benefit if they experience any of the below.
✏️ Underlying foundations need support - difficulty manipulating small objects, immature pencil grip, difference in hand strength, shaky, stiff movement or finding it tricky sitting comfortably to write.
😤 Frequently avoiding drawing, puzzles or threading, or preferring toys that don't require hand manipulation.
📚 School readiness – letter reversals, difficulties with letter or number formation, spacing or no established hand dominance by the expected age, making it harder to get ideas down on paper.
✂️ Difficulty holding or using scissors, cutting along a line, or coordinating both hands together for tasks like holding paper steady while cutting.
🤲 Reduce independence because finding it tricky to manage utensils, zippers, buttons, shoelaces or often asking for help with age appropriate tasks.
📝 Finds writing tasks frustrating – becoming easily upset, asking for help with age-appropriate tasks, or rushing through work reducing quality output.
